Since 2012, John Sopko has undertaken the oversight and investigation of reconstruction work in Afghanistan. This has been of enormous help to the international community that provides development and military assistance to Afghanistan, since the uncertain security situation makes monitoring and oversight difficult. Mr. Sopko will share his thoughts on his findings on how accountable and effective external assistance has been in Afghanistan. The event also offers lessons learned from Canadian endeavours in Afghanistan, which will help shape similar work in future.
John F. Sopko was appointed as Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction in 2012. Mr. Sopko has over 30 years of experience in oversight and investigation as a prosecutor, congressional counsel, and senior federal government advisor. His government experience includes over 20 years on Capitol Hill, where he held key positions in both the Senate and House of Representatives.
