In early 2007, Mart de Kruif assumed command of 43 Mechanised Brigade in Havelte for which he was promoted to Brigadier General. He was responsible for the training, formation and operational readiness of the brigade for ISAF operations in Uruzgan. In 2008, he was promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed as Commander Regional Command South (designate). Major General de Kruif commanded the circa 40.000 ISAF forces in Regional Command South from November 2008 till November 2009.
