A geologist by profession, Stefano Porretti has worked with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) since 1987 and from 2008 he has served as the WFP Representative & Country Director in Afghanistan. His responsibilities include the planning and implementation of a new office model to permit WFP to respond to a sudden changing environment in order to better address emergency and reconstruction needs; to enhance best practices procedures for operations management in UN no-go areas; to advise and support the Government of Afghanistan in establishing more adequate social safety network mechanisms and adopt a sound food security policy; advocate for an effective joint programming within the UN system and to co-chair of the Food Security and Agriculture Cluster. Before his appointment to Afghanistan, Mr. Porreti was the Representative and Country Director in Iraq, Chad and Guinea. Hi other postings include Sudan, Burkina Faso and Mali. Mr. Porretti has also worked for the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
