Event Date: January 19, 2023 - 4:00pm to 6:00pm EST
Location: FSS 4004
Presented by CIPS and the Research Chair in Taiwan Studies
Is Taiwan’s fate in the balance? Since its foundation, the PRC has made the “reunification” of the island a non-negotiable objective, and has never renounced the use of force, with its constantly developing defense capabilities. In August 2022, the PLA engaged in an unprecedented show of force to assert its positions. However, since the democratization process started in the 1980s, Taiwan has been moving away ideologically from an increasingly closed China under Xi Jinping. But behind the appearances of power on one side, on the Continent, and weakness on the other, which can only lead to the ultimate success of Beijing, lie much more complex strategic, economic, and ideological power relations that the war in Ukraine has made even more certain.
This event will take place in French.
