Mr. Rivard will discuss the mandate of Canada’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the structure and function of the United Nations and the role the mission plays in asserting our values and defending our interests on the international stage.
Gilles Rivard is Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations in New York City since 2010. Prior to his appointment, he was previously Canada’s Ambassador to the Republic of Haiti. Over his 26 years of experience in international relations, he also held senior positions at the Canadian International Development Agency, including as Vice-President, Europe, Maghreb and Middle East, and Vice-President, Americas; Director General of policy, strategic planning and technical service for Africa;; Director General of the Balkans, Caucasus and Central Asia programs; as well as Program Director for Haïti, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
