In 2022, the UN Security Council proved unable to prevent or reverse Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Some analysts predicted paralysis for the Security Council over this ongoing breach of international law by a permanent member, or, as one member said on the eve of the invasion, the “deathbed” for multilateralism. At the same time, the Council’s failure has inspired member states to advocate more strongly for its reform. This talk will review and contextualise developments in the Security Council over the past year, and set out where the reform agenda stands.
This event will take place in English.
