A new report, Global Education for Canadians, to be released at this event, sounds an urgent warning that Canada is not preparing its young people to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. International learning provides students with skills and knowledge that are essential for their success and for Canada’s future. Yet Canada is lagging far behind peer countries, including the US, Australia, and members of the European Union, all of which have pursued ambitious strategies to expand learning-abroad experiences for their students. The report sets out a plan for Canadian governments, educational institutions and the private sector to dramatically increase the number of young Canadian who participate in international study, co-ops, and work traineeships abroad, including in emerging countries.

The Study Group on Global Education is an independent group of post-secondary leaders, business executives, and policy experts who came together in early 2017 to take a fresh look at Canada’s approach to international education. The group was co-sponsored by the Centre for International Policy Studies at the University of Ottawa and the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto.
