Peter MacArthur holds a BA Joint Hons in Political Science and History from McGill University and was a Guy Drummond scholar at l’Institut d’études politique de Paris. Peter’s 40 year foreign service career focused on the Indo-Pacific region culminated in his appointments as ambassador of Canada to Indonesia, Timor Leste and the Philippines from 2016 to 2022. Between 2015 and 2018, he was Canada’s senior official to the Asia Pacific Economic Forum (APEC). At Headquarters, he worked as deputy director, economic relations with Russia; deputy director, policy and strategic planning; director, Canadian Trade Commissioner Service overseas operations; and director, China and Mongolia. He also served as director general, global business opportunities and then as director general of the South, Southeast Asia and Oceania. Early on in his career, he was posted as trade commissioner in Moscow and New Delhi and as consul in Mumbai. Peter was seconded to Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra, where he worked in the OECD-G7 section and the East Asia Analytical Unit. He also served as trade commissioner in Hong Kong as well as minister (commercial) and senior trade commissioner in Tokyo.
