Presented by the International Commission of Jurist Canada in collaboration with CIPS and the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa:
How best to respond to terrorism while protecting rights and freedoms is a highly complex issue. As the Trudeau government examines possible changes to Canada’s counter-terrorism framework, it is asking Canadians to become active partners in finding an appropriate balance between security and rights. This panel aims to unpack the Department of Public Safety’s backgrounder on their upcoming consultations: “Our Security, Our Rights: National Security Green Paper 2016.” Discussions will include the current security environment, the legal and human rights perspectives, and the federal government’s specific commitments related to former Bill C-51. Consideration will also be given to issues related to accountability, prevention, and investigative capabilities in a digital world.
Co-chairs:
Errol Mendes, Faculty of Law, President, ICJ Canada
Chantal Bernier, Counsel, Dentons, Board Member, ICJ Canada
