PHILIP SALZMAN, McGill University.
Presented by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and CIPS.
Free. In English. Registration is not required.
Philip Salzman is an anthropology professor at McGill University. His ethnographic research has been carried out primarily among nomadic and pastoral peoples in Baluchistan (Iran), Rajasthan (India), and most recently in Sardinia (Italy). He is especially interested in exploring the similarities and differences among nomadic peoples in different places and in understanding the reasons for these differences. He is currently exploring “equality” and “freedom” by drawing on the many philosophical discourses on these subjects and applying their complex understanding to the rich ethnographic descriptions of specific societies and cultures.
