Irene Khan
International norms and values are under attack and sustainable development is being threatened by entrenched, bloody conflicts, growing inequalities, xenophobic politics, and populist leadership that encourages division and discord. Drawing on her experience as a native of Bangladesh, a human rights advocate, development practitioner, and former refugee worker, Irene Khan will analyze the challenges and opportunities of re-building war-torn societies and restoring faith in liberal democracy.
Irene Khan, Director-General, International Development Law Organization, is an international thought leader on human rights, rule of law, and development. She was Secretary General of Amnesty International from 2001–2009 and prior to that worked for the UNHCR for 21 years. Ms. Khan serves on the boards of several international human rights and development organizations and is the recipient of multiple honorary degrees and awards, including the City of Sydney Peace Prize in 2006. Born in Bangladesh, she studied law at the University of Manchester and Harvard Law School.
