CONSTANZE STELZENMÜLLER, German Marshall Fund of the United States.
Presented by CIPS.
Amid the global financial and debt crisis, Germany has become the object of heightened expectations from neighbors and partners, not least because of its economic success. Its new government will have to deal responsibly with Germany’s power and increasing expectations of German leadership. In the fall of 2012, the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP/German Institute for International and Security Affairs) assembled 45 experts on foreign and security policy to discuss challenges for German foreign and security policy in a series of conferences and workshops through mid-2013. The outcome of their deliberations, a report entitled “Neue Macht, Neue Verantwortung” (“New Power, New Responsibility”) was published in October 2013. Dr. Constanze Stelzenmüller will discuss the report’s perspectives and recommendations for Germany’s international role, strategic relationships, and security policy.
