Prior to the launch of the book with the same title, Professor Errol P. Mendes of the Faculty of Law will address the thesis of the book which focuses on perhaps the biggest challenge facing this historic new global Court which is whether peace and justice are always reconcilable or are adversaries. In particular he will focus on these issues in Sudan and Uganda. Given the recent referendum in South Sudan and the indictment of the President of Sudan by the Court, this issue takes on a heightened global significance. His book on the International Criminal Court is derived in part from his experience and knowledge as a Visiting Professional at the International Criminal Court in 2009 and research with key players in the field of international criminal, humanitarian and human rights laws at the Court and elsewhere around the world.
Professor Mendes completed his term as Director of the Human Rights Research and Education Centre on June 30, 2001 having lead projects on governance, human rights and conflict resolution in Asia, Africa and Latin America and returned to full-time teaching in the Common Law section at the University of Ottawa teaching in the area of international law, human rights, constitutional law and business law and ethics. Professor Mendes has served as a human rights tribunal member in Ontario and at the federal level. He has also been an adviser to several of Canada’s largest corporations and worked with leading private sector companies and associations to establish an International Code of Ethics for Canadian Businesses, which was endorsed by former Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy on September 15, 1997. In 1999, in recognition of his work on business ethics in Canada, the Office of the Secretary General of the United Nations appointed Professor Mendes as an adviser on how to encourage the world’s largest multinationals to participate in the Global Compact on corporate social responsibility in their global operations. In 2005 he was appointed by former Prime Minister Paul Martin to the position of Senior Adviser in the Privy Council of Canada where he advised the government on areas of his expertise. He is the author, co-author and editor of dozens of books and articles in is field of expertise.
