Dr. Ioannou will talk about the reactions of the European Union and Eurozone to the economic crisis that their member states have suffered since 2009, with a particular focus on the European Central Bank’s (ECB) role in managing the consequences of this crisis. He will also discuss the ongoing project to create a banking union in the Eurozone, especially the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) currently being set up by the ECB.
Demosthenes Ioannou has worked since 2000 in the ECB’s DG International and European Relations (DG-I) and DG Economics (DG-E). He has held the position of Head of the ECB Representative Office in Brussels, and has represented the ECB as Alternate Member in the Economic Policy Committee (EPC) of the EU and as observer participant in the ECOFIN Council and the EU Macroeconomic Dialogue. He is currently Principal Economist in the EU Institutions and Fora Division of DG-I leading the team of economists dealing with the inter-institutional relations of the SSM and banking union developments more generally. He has studied economics, politics and philosophy and holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge.
