Following 9/11 and the Iraqi invasion, the American intelligence community underwent intense scrutiny and was dramatically changed by new legislation which created the post of Director of National Intelligence and ‘reformed’ the institutions making up the community. What were they intended to achieve, what did they attempt to do, and, perhaps most importantly, what did they achieve? Is the US intelligence community in better shape today to confront global challenges than it was a decade ago? An experienced senior operations officer formerly with the CIA’s clandestine service offers her views.
