Elizabeth Cobbett is completing a PhD thesis which explores the different ways in which global finance seeks profitable opportunities within localized social structures. This approach amplifies the significance of cultural and social factors that are often ignored by mainstream approaches to the political economy of global finance. Her case study centers on global financial flows in South Africa and her thesis is informed theoretically by an engagement with the works of Fernand Braudel, Giovanni Arrighi and Robert Cox.
This seminar is part of IPEN’s series of informal lunchtime talks, providing opportunities for IPEN members and advanced students to present and discuss work in progress.
