Mr. Liu will discuss cross-strait relations between Taiwan and mainland China, and on Taiwan’s mainland policy. He will explain the underlying thinking of President of Taiwan Ma Ying-jeou’s mainland policy and the prospects for cross-strait relations, including the achievements made so far and the challenges that lie ahead. He will also address the disputed claims to island territories in the East China Sea and the South China Sea.
Chih Kung Liu is a career diplomat, appointed by the Republic of China (Taiwan) as Head of Mission of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Ottawa. He holds a PhD in political science from National Chengchi University. He joined the Foreign Service in 1986 and has been posted in Boston and Washington, D.C.; South Africa; Mongolia; and the Czech Republic. Before his posting to Canada in August, 2012, he was Deputy Secretary-General of the National Security Council. He has also been a visiting fellow at Shorenstein APARC, Stanford University.
