Thierry Balzacq’s research presents security and diplomacy as ritualistic activities, which aim to transform agents’ interest conflicts into social performances. By emphasizing ritual performances, the research aims to initiate a shift from the understanding of action as the expression of cultural patterns to examining that which makes and hosts such patterns.
Thierry Balzacq is Honorary Professorial Fellow in Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh and Tocqueville Professor of International Relations at the University of Namur. He has just completed (co-ed. with Frédéric Ramel) Traité de Relations internationales (Paris, Presses de Sciences Po, 2013, 1228 pages) and a volume on Contesting Security: Resistance, Desecuritization, Emancipation, and Resilience (Routledge, December 2014).
