- A collaborative research project examining the historical legacies of Gulf security and the fundamental domestic and international vulnerabilities of the various states in the region.

Project Details and Goals
- Contributors will write original papers on Gulf security, and in doing so they will each:
Take into consideration the historical legacy of Gulf security in order to escape the “here and now” fallacies of much of the literature emanating from think tanks in the United States or the region; and
Assess whether these fundamentals were in any way altered by September 11 and more importantly the changed role of the United States in the region, its shift from “over the horizon” balancer to local player physically present in Iraq, one of the two foremost regional powers.

Outcomes
- The project papers were published in a December 2009 special issue of the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies.
