Cooperation, Competition, and Adaptation in a Post-Pandemic World

The Centre for International Policy Studies is excited to announce the continuation of our annual graduate student conference. This year’s theme will be “Cooperation, Competition, and Adaptation in a Post-Pandemic World.” The conference will take place on March 18th, 2022, at the University of Ottawa. This will be an in-person event, with the current social distancing measures observed (the event will be moved online if public health measure do not allow in-person events). The Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS) is pleased to offer a limited number of travel bursaries to students who wish to participate from other universities within Canada. Please indicate in your submission if you would like to be considered for a travel bursary. This event is organized in collaboration with The Centre for International Peace and Security Studies at McGill University and the Université de Montréal.

The pandemic has profoundly transformed our world. Since the end of 2019, over two hundred million global citizens have been infected by COVID-19, leading to the loss of over five million people around the globe. In many ways, this worldwide emergency has amplified the inequities growing in our own backyards, all the while unearthing colonially rooted inequalities which reach beyond borders. Further forcing us to confront these realities has been the intercontinental race to contain virus variants, amidst a globally inequitable distribution of vaccines. In the international arena, the rise of illiberalism, populism, and nationalism, in countries ranging from the United States, to Belarus, to Poland and Hungary, have reminded scholars that the liberal international order is fragile. Given the growing influence of both China and Russia on the world stage, it is guaranteed that geopolitical tensions will continue to evolve in new and unpredictable ways. The impacts of climate change, a possible debt crisis, newly implemented global taxation regimes, tensions over intellectual property, and the rapid spread of social media will undoubtedly further complicate these strains on global powers. As we turn towards a post-pandemic future, nations will be forced to cooperate, compete and adapt in new and innovative ways as global players within an ever changing globalized world. For our 2022 edition, we are welcoming submissions from a wide range of disciplines including but not limited to political science, economics, international security, environmental studies and international relations.

Graduate students who are interested in presenting their research on these or related topics, we invite you to submit a proposal in either English or French by Friday, February 11, 2022 at 11:59 (Eastern Standard Time) to [email protected]. Those authors who are selected will be notified by February 14, 2022. The proposal must contain a title and a 500-800 word abstract. The completed paper should be between 4000 to 6000 words and must be sent by March 1st, 2022.
