The Centre for International Policy Studies invites you to join us for a webinar with human rights, conflict and aid experts who will discuss the unfolding humanitarian crisis, the political climate, and current restrictions faced by women and girls in Afghanistan more than one year after the return of the Taliban.

Dr. Sima Samar
Afghan women’s and human rights advocate, activist, and a social worker. Minister of Women’s Affairs of Afghanistan- 2001 to 2003. Chair of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) – 2002 to 2019. Member of the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Internal Displacement- 2019.
Fatima Gailani
Afghanistan women and human rights activist. President of the Afghan Red Crescent Society- 2005 to 2016. Member of the Afghan government’s negotiating team with the Taliban – one of only four women to have participated in talks with the Taliban in Doha, Qatar, in 2020.
Dr. Arne Strand
Political Scientist specializing in Post-war recovery and humanitarian assistance in complex emergencies. A Senior Researcher at Chr. Michelson Institute of Norway’s current research focuses on peace, conflict, aid, and Afghanistan.
Professor of International Affairs and Director of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa, Associate Fellow of Chatham House, and former Senior Advisor on Global Affairs and Defence to the Prime Minister of Canada.
Currently a Senior Fellow and Principal Researcher at the University of Ottawa. Served as a Senior Policy Analyst in international development and foreign aid for over 30 years with the government of Canada. Represented the Canadian government as a diplomat in Bangladesh, Indonesia, India/Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Afghanistan, heading Canada’s aid program in the four latter countries.
