After more than 25 years at the most senior levels of the Canadian public service in the fields of intelligence, security, and defence, Ward Elcock retired earlier in 2016. In this talk, he will reflect on his vast experience and will share his thoughts on the terrorist threat to Canada. He will also discuss current debates surrounding appropriate counter-terrorism responses.

Ward P.D. Elcock served as the Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) from 1994 until 2004. He also served as the Deputy Minister of National Defence from August 2004 to October 2007. From 2007 to 2010, he was the Federal Coordinator for Olympic and G8/G20 security. From 2010 until his retirement in 2016, he was Special Advisor on human smuggling and illegal migration. Before serving as CSIS director, Elcock was the Deputy Clerk (Security & Intelligence) of the Privy Council Office (PCO) for five years, and Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet (Legislation and House Planning/Counsel) for six years.
